About the Montessori School and Educare

Elliot Academy offers a full Montessori environment from 3 to 12 years old.  We have 3 classrooms stocked with Montessori materials in beautifully prepared environments run by dedicated and passionate directresses who offer a high quality of education in a relaxed and happy environment.  There is also a mainstream Educare class which accepts learners from 6 months to 5 years in a mainstream environment.

Extra subjects given are Afrikaans and Computers.  Swimming is also a compulsory activity, as it is an essential life skill.  Extra mural service providers visit the school from time to time to add to the curriculum.

3 – 6 years (Preschoolers)

Our preschool offers the traditional Montessori syllabus of Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Culture (including the Arts).  Learners between the ages of 3-6 years are educated to become independent and responsible individuals whilst exploring their environment and becoming socially skilled.  The outside environment is equipped with beautiful climbing frames and a garden filled with lawns and trees for running, clambering and developing gross motor co-ordination.

6-12 years (Lower Elementary Class) Grades 1 - 3

The Montessori system grades learners from Year 1 – 3 in this environment which follows on from the Preschool years.  The classroom is arranged as a prepared environment to extend the foundation of the Montessori preschool years into further discovery of Language, Mathematics and Culture with concrete learning beginning to transition into the abstract.  All Grade 3 learners write an assessment test with the IEB (Independent Board of Education) to ensure that standards are adhered to.  Our Grades 1 -3 share the outside environment with the preschool as well as having an outside slab area where Physical Education and other extra mural activities take place.

9-12 years (Upper Elementary Class) Grades 4 – 7)

From Grade 4, the Montessori learners enter the Upper Elementary class to continue their educational journey into more advanced Language, Mathematics and Cultural experiences.  The progression from concrete learning to abstract learning is completed in this class.  Their outside environment is separate to the other Montessori learners and includes an area for co-operative games, ball games, a trampoline, swings and a basketball hoop.  Grades 4 and 5 also write an assessment test with the IEB, and all Grade 6’s complete a Core Skills test mid-year.

Educare (Mainstream) (6 months to 5 years)

Our educare environment offers two classes to provide educational care for working parents.  We have skilled and experienced staff who offer potty training, feeding and other essential care for toddlers and babies. Learners receive meals of breakfast and lunch as well as a rest period.  There is a dedicated outside area equipped with equipment geared for the smaller child and separate from the other outside areas, for safety and containment.   Children from 3 – 5 years who wish to enter the mainstream Brylin Primary school are also educated in this environment by dedicated and experienced staff to prepare the child for the formal school.

After School Care

Aftercare is offered to Brylin Primary and Elliot Academy learners from ages 6 months to 12 years.  We have 2 dedicated staff members who assist in the completion of homework for the formal learner and supervise playtime and socialising for the younger learner.  Learners receive a cooked lunch, rest period (for preschoolers only) and supervised outside play.  The facility is open from 12pm to 5pm.
